LGDC: Some problems with the site code

Posted 2002-06-13 UTC by creinig [Discussion Board]

By accident I uploaded several new, experimental, untested modifications for the PHP code underlying this site and, guess what, they don't work. Well, it's not *that* bad - the only areas that seem to be affected are updates to dynamic content (invalid DB queries are created) and user login (apparently triggers a bug in the local PHP installation, causing it to segfault).

It will take some time until that stuff is fixed. Please be patient.

Industry: Tux Games planning OSS Game Compilation

Posted 2002-06-04 UTC by creinig [Discussion Board]

No, not that kind of compilation :-) Here's the text from their homepage:

Tux Games will shortly be producing an Open Source Games Compilation CD. Each CD will come with a $10 donation code that can be donated to any group that has a game on the CD.
If you have a completed game that is distributed under an Open Source licence, please click here for further information about how to ensure your game is included.

Libraries: Crystal Space Contest!

Posted 2002-05-07 UTC by jorrit [Discussion Board]

Recently the Crystal Space project got a $1000 grant from LinuxFund.org

In order to get 'rid' of that $1000 we decided to organize a Crystal Space based contest! So here is your chance to do something with and for Crystal Space and also earn a little money in the process. So here are the rules for this contest:

  • The deadline for the contest is August the first of 2002. Entries should be mailed to me BEFORE that date.
  • The contest is about writing a game, demo, or useful tool for Crystal Space using the Crystal Space framework.
  • It is recommended that the source code of this contest entry is not more than 5000 lines. Blocks is 4500 lines and csdemo is 3653 lines so this should be possible :-)
  • If the contest entry needs additional data (textures, map file, sounds, ...) it is recommended that the total amount of data does not exceed 10Megs (compressed).
  • The source code of this contest entry must be released under an OSI approved Open Source license. You can find a list at: www.opensource.org
  • The following CS versions are legal for creation of this contest entry:
    • 0.94r002
    • 0.96 (if that gets released before August).
    • cvs
If you use cvs the only requirement is that it works with the cvs version of CS on July 15 (two weeks before the deadline). So you have two options here: use cvs and update regularly, or download a snapshot now and then download again at July 15 to see if your code still works.
  • People that contributed to CS cannot participate in this contest! The idea is that we let new people try to make something in CS. So if your name is in docs/history.txt or docs/history.old you cannot participate. If you feel this is unfair then just mail one of the judges (me and a few others that will be announced later) and we will decide on this matter on a case by case basis then. Of course you are free to become a CS developer later :-)
  • The judges will be top CS contributors (probably me, Philip Wyett, perhaps Eric Sunshine, Wouter Wijngaards, Norman Kramer, ...). This list still has to be decided.
  • Every contest entry will be judged based on code quality and depending on the type of entry, playability, demo value, or usefulness.
  • All entries that will be sent to us will be made available on the CS website. With full source.
  • Including binaries is not required but a nice touch.
  • Making sure the contest entry is portable (at least linux and windows) is a good point in your favor.
  • And finally: the prices are (in USD):
    • $500 for first place
    • $250 for second place
    • $200 for third place

Good luck!

Escape of the Unicorn is a free, 2D flying shooter game. You are a brave unicorn who is trapped in a dangerous land full of evil creatures. You are trying to escape, but beware of all encountered entities - they can harm you much. You can shoot arrows, but the monsters are firing missiles too.

It is really hard to survive...

Good luck, you will need it!

You can find the latest version of the game on the sourceforge.net project page.

Games: Hephaestus 1.07 released as freeware

Posted 2002-04-30 UTC by kamikaze [Discussion Board]

Hephaestus is a freeware computer role-playing game construction kit (often called an "RPG maker"). You can write your own adventures in a simple yet powerful scripting language, and share them with anyone else who has Hephaestus. Hephaestus is written entirely in Java, and therefore runs on every platform.

The first adventure for Hephaestus is "Hades", an adaptation of the original Rogue.

You can find it at: http://kuoi.asui.uidaho.edu/~kamikaze/Hephaestus/
